To exactly implement the non-linear Hoek-Brown(HB) strength reduction, firstly, the HB criterion was connected with the Mohr-Coulomb(MC) criterion using the slope of an arbitrary point at the p-q curve. The relationship between the material strength reduction factor incorporated in the HB yield function and the strength reduction factor was derived. The results indicate that the geometry shape and position of the sliding plane and the corresponding safety factor calculated using the non-linear HB strength reduction method are consistent with those obtained using the simplified Bishop method.
