The Qaidam Basin with its unique geographical position and structural environment was controlled by three large size circumferential faults during its formation and evolution. Based on fission track age dating of apatite and zircon, in combination with previous model of Altun Tagh strike-slip fault and structural feature of northwestern Qaidam basin, two tectonic events in northwestern Qaidam Basin after last Mesozoic age were determined, corresponding to Mid-Cretaceous and Early Neogene, respectively.
