Rapid modulation of plasmonic scattering from nanoparticles is realized using a temperature-actuated supporting gel layer to change their separation from a mirror surface. This forms an optical cavity embedded between scattering nanoparticle and underlying mirror. The 70 nm thick poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brushes achieve video rate switching, yielding large-area thin films, which change color with wavelength shifts Δλ > 400 nm.
