A rational design strategy is proposed to develop excellent intelligent materials based on phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes displaying tunable luminescence response to electric field. Based on tunable electrochromic luminescence, an information “self-encryption” method is developed by utilizing photoluminescence lifetime imaging microscopy without needing extra interference fluorescence. Furthermore, a multilevel information anticounterfeiting is realized utilizing the electric-field-induced changes in both luminescence colors and lifetimes.
