Starting from the same precursors, indenoindole derivatives are conveniently obtained by palladium-catalyzed tandem -arylation/nucleophilic addition, whereas the copper-catalyzed cascade approach involving a nucleophilic addition/Ullman-type C—O coupling affords benzofuroindolines.
