First findings of Trichinella spiralis and DNA of Echinococcus multilocularis in wild raccoon dogs in the Netherlands

In one of nine raccoon dogs, DNA of Echinococcus multilocularis was detected. The infected animal was from an area not known to be endemic for E. multilocularis. In one of nine raccoon dogs Trichinella spiralis was found, with high larval burden. T. spiralis has not been reported previously in carnivores in the Netherlands. This is the first report of zoonotic parasites in raccoon dogs in the Netherlands.
