Improved photoluminescence properties of BaAl2Si2O8:Eu3+,Tb3+ phosphors by doping Tb3+

In this study, Ba0.88-xAl2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+, xTb3+(0≤x≤0.12) and Ba0.88Al2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+ phosphors are prepared by the solution combustion method. The phosphors crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system along with a space group of P6/mmm. The photoluminescence properties are substantially improved by the doping of Tb3+ ions to the Ba0.88Al2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+ phosphor, which is attributed to the efficient energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+. The emission intensity at 612 nm of the Ba0.82Al2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+,0.06Tb3+ phosphor is over three times higher than that of the Ba0.88Al2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+ phosphor. The incorporation of Tb3+ to the Ba0.88Al2Si2O8:0.12Eu3+ phosphor is a highly promising way for enhancing photoluminescence properties.
