Recent data highlight the true burden of non-primary maternal infection in congenital CMV infection. Accurate diagnosis of maternal primary infection is achievable. Diagnosis of fetal infection by amniocentesis is reliable. Establishing the prognosis of an infected fetus is achievable with over 90% positive and negative predictive values. First successful non-randomized study using valaciclovir for symptomatic fetuses.
