The PDL geometry strongly modulates the load response of the tooth-PDL-bone complex. Simulating a variable PDL reproduce in vivo tooth motion better than a uniform PDL. In such simulations, lower PDL strains and more uniform bone stresses are observed. Tooth motion and tilting are central protective design concepts of multi-rooted teeth. A hyperelastic material model for the PDL reliably recreates tooth motion under load.
