Under hypertonic conditions, betaine allows recovery and stimulation of translation. Cap-independent translation is driven by 5′-UTR region of mRNA. Betaine enhances 5′-UTR-driven 48 S pre-initiation complex formation. Betaine modulates protein synthesis by favoring cap-independent mRNA recruitment. Proteins involved in stress adaptation are translated by cap-independent mechanisms.
