The FHIT gene, identified at 3p14.2, encompasses the FRA3B fragile site and is disrupted by the t(3;8) chromosomal translocation in familial renal cell carcinoma. FHIT is a member of the histidine triad gene family and encodes a dinucleoside 5′, 5-P1, P3-triphosphate hydrolase (Ap3A) which cleaves the diadenosine triphosphate into ADP and AMP.
