A facile synthesis of plasmonic Bi metal deposits and Ag@AgIislandsonhigh(*)–responsive BiOI 3D architectures through solvent reduction and in situ ion–exchange followed by solvothermal reaction and photoreduction method. Electron transfers (Bi → BiOICBM → Ag → AgIVBM) effectively enhance separation holes of BiOIVBM and electrons of AgICBM, which lead to an enhanced synergistic photocatalytic disinfection activity. Produced main reactive species, including h+, e− and O2−, that played important roles in the synergistic photocatalytic disinfection process.
