Distinct inflammatory responses differentiate cerebral infarct from transient ischaemic attack

Infarct and haemorrhage show neutrophilia, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) does not. In infarct, Granzyme B (GzmB) expression is downregulated while matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and S100A12 increase. Infarct shows increases in circulating MMP-9 and S100A12, while TIA does not. GzmB accumulates intracellularly during stroke and is not released. Different mechanisms underlie TIA and infarct.
