We present experimental support for a model of abalone nacregrowth that is based onmineral bridges between successive aragonite tablets rather than onheteroepitaxialnucleation. Interlamellar sheets of organic polymers delineate thearagonite tablets butallow the tablets to grow mineral bridges through pores in the sheets.Atomic forcemicroscope images of interlamellar organic sheets from flat pearls madeby Haliotis rufescens(red abalone; marine gastropod mollusk) reveal a fibrous core and holesof 5-50 nm indiameter. Scanning ion conductance microscopy shows that theseholes are actually poresthrough the interlamellar sheets. With the help of statisticalanalysis we can associate thepore-to-pore spacings in the interlamellar sheets with the observedoffsets of successive nacretablets. These results, supplemented by AFM, SEM, and TEM images, support and extendthe model of biofabrication of gastropod nacre which is based onmineral bridges betweenthe aragonite tablets.
