The first early-transition-
metal 1-chloro-2,2-difluorovinyl co
mplexes [Cp
2TiX
n(CCl=CF
2)
2-n](X = Cl, F;
n = 0, 1) have been synthesized by the low-te
mperature reaction of Cp
2TiX
2(X = Cl, F) with (1-chloro-2,2-difluorovinyl)lithu
m, generated in situ fro
m HCFC-133a (CF
3CH
2Cl) and
n-butyllithiu
m. The co
mplexes have been characterized by spectroscopy and, inthe case of [Cp
2TiCl(CCl=CF
2)], by single crystal X-ray diffraction,
making this the firststructurally characterized titaniu
m-based fluorovinyl co
mpound. The
marked solution-phaseinstability of these
materials has been explored in an atte
mpt to identify key characteristicsthat
might lead to stabilized syste
ms. To this end, syntheses of the co
mpounds [Cp*
2TiF
n(CF=CF
2)
2-n] (
n = 0, 1) and [Cp
2TiMe(CCl=CF
2)] have been reported and their stabilitiesinvestigated further. In the case of [Cp
2TiMe(CCl=CF
2)], this has led to the spectroscopiccharacterization of the
