The fine structure of zero phonon lines in the electronic absorption spectra of lanthanide ion systems isinterpreted by an effective spin Hamiltonian model. The splittings of several cm-1 observed for lanthanideions with interionic separations near 1 nm in elpasolite lattices are attributed to superexchange interactions.
