The prevalence of traumatic life experiences in homeless women: A phenomenological study.

Homeless women make up one third of the 3.5 million homeless people in the United States. Traumatic life experiences are disproportionately examined in the lives of homeless women. The current qualitative phenomenological study captured the lived experiences of trauma in 17 formerly and 3 currently homeless women. In-depth, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted for the purpose of collecting data from each participant. Atlas ti software was used to analyze data. The results of the study indicated through seven emergent themes that a high prevalence of trauma history exists among homeless women and that these traumatic experiences play a significant role in how homeless women form relationships later in life.
