Who is the absent father? What happens to a child when the father is absent? What happened to me? This thesis explores my personal experience of having an absent biological father and my attempt to try to understand why my father left my family before I was born. While my biological father was physically absent my entire childhood,there are other children who have fathers who are both physically and emotionally absent for different portions of their lives. We want answers for this abandonment. We want to understand why we feel the way we feel about our fathers. Is it okay to desire them? Is it okay to want to push them away? Starting with a writing class led by Jeff Berman,a professor at SUNY Albany,I venture from asking questions about my father in my own memoir to exploring the absent father in mythology,Shakespeare,and Disney films. Where is the absent father in literature? Where is the absent father in culture? Where is my father? These are only some of the questions that this thesis work includes. The myths of Athena and Persephone as well as movies such as The Little Mermaid and Bambi are only a few of the chapters explored in relation to the absent father in an attempt to understand my own abandonment. I hope to finally understand my fathers actions. This thesis is a chance to heal and help others heal too.
