文摘
Past industrial, commercial and domestic activities have left a legacy of soil contamination within inner-city redevelopment districts, making difficult efforts to redevelop the land. These difficulties take the form of unknown remediation expenses, often leaving neighborhoods unable to attract new commerce, recreation and jobs. In an attempt to environmentally and economically revitalize these damaged properties, governmental programs have been developed to encourage flexible cleanup alternatives, thereby giving planners and developers leeway and incentives to try innovative technological approaches to remediation. Knowing the history of industrial, commercial, residential, and transportation activities within an area can provide a tool for predicting the presence of contaminants and, ultimately, for evaluating the possibility of using innovative technology for remediation. This thesis reviews the literature concerning brownfield redevelopment, phytoremediation, and other issues related to soil remediation. It provides a framework for predicting the presence of lead,a toxic soil contaminant predicted to be present within many inner-city neighborhoods as a result of leaded gasoline emissions, industrial waste production, and residue from deteriorating lead-based paints. It proposes phytoremediation as an innovative technology able to provide long-term,low-cost remediation of lead contaminated soils. And it presents several design opportunities for employing phytoremediation to remediate soil lead contamination within The Cedars,an urban redevelopment district in Dallas,Texas.
