英国现当代小说家劳伦斯·达雷尔的代表作《亚历山大四重奏》一经出版,便以其四部曲小说中前三部从不同视角讲述同一故事的写作特点备受西方评论界关注。达雷尔在采访中表示这部作品是一部探讨现代爱情的小说,然而多数批评家认为,它虽主题关乎爱情,但城市在整部小说中的重要作用更是不容忽视。达雷尔笔下的亚历山大是过去与现在交融的历史之城,是感官体验与政治阴谋交错的欲望之城,更是多元文化与神秘元素共存的异托邦之城。达雷尔将相对论的观点渗透进复写本式的多层结构中,通过时空-回忆的统一体的结构探寻时间与空间、真实与虚构、主观与客观的边界。达雷尔笔下的亚历山大是其城市情结和对现代社会思考的产物,既代表其城市景观的终极理想,也反映了他深切的人文关怀。
The Alexandria Quartet, the most well-known tetralogy of British contemporary novelist Lawrence Durrell, tells the same story from three different perspectives in the first three novels. Since its publication, it has drawn numerous attentions from western critics due to this distinctive style. Durrell states in an interview that The Alexan dria Quartet is an investigation of modern love, yet many critics have argued that city writing lies at the core of this magnum opus. Durrell's Alexandria is a historical city where present constantly encounters past; it is a city of desire where sensual experiences intertwine with political conspiracy; it is a heterotopia where boundaries between different cultures are blurred. Durrell infiltrates ideas of relativity into the palimpsestic structure, employing time-memory continuum to explore borders of time and space, reality and fiction, subjectivity and objectivity. Durrell's Alexandria is a product of his city complex and contemplation upon modern society; it is not only the representative of his ultimate ideal of cityscape, but also a reflection of Durrell's earnest humanities.
