•Governance approach of the Marujá community in a Brazilian state park is introduced.•Presence or absence of Ostrom’s and Cox and others’ design principles is analyzed.•All of Ostrom’s and most of Cox and others’ principles can be confirmed.•Features of the approach are discussed in terms of their relevance for its success.•Additional factors contributing to the overall success are explored and debated.
