•Industrial cement flue gas is suitable for cultivation of microalgae isolated from the Baltic Sea.•Microalgal biomass composition is of high quality and not altered by flue gas.•Brackish algal communities performed better than monocultures used in research and development.•Including microalgae to transform CO2 into renewable resources is a realistic solution for the future.
