•Logging and prescribed burning do not fully mimic natural disturbances.•Harvests led to shortage of resources for early-successional species.•Burning without logging caused a long-term increase in species richness.•Beneficial effect of burning on pyrophilous beetles was evident but transient.•Retention trees alleviated the long-term effects of clearcutting on beetles.
