•Participatory research methods are suitable for mapping and managing invasive plants.•Prosopis has negatively affected the native species and livestock resources of Afar.•The most affected land-cover categories were grasslands, and exposed sand & soil.•Important benefits of Prosopis include firewood, charcoal and animal fodder.
