•Whole chains of exergy flows for different cooling systems were compared.•The water-based floor cooling system performed better than the air-based cooling system.•Cool exergy was used to study the effects of crawl-space and ground on system performance.•A new exergy efficiency was used to show the benefits of coupling ground and floor cooling.•Using cool exergy from natural resources results in significant exergy consumption reductions.
