•Preconditioning strategy for Jacobian-free solvers for Richards’ equation is proposed.•The strategy is based on a stable discretization of the continuum Jacobian.•It simplifies the use of sophisticated advanced discretizations on polytopal meshes.•The performance was improved in 3–20 times for challenging infiltration problems.
