•We fitted three probability distributions to more than 42.000 drop spectra.•Drop spectra have been collected word wide by 2D video disdrometers.•Complete and truncated maximum likelihood methods have been applied.•Kolmogorov–Smirnov test has been applied to verify the adequacy of the fittings.
