•Emergy evaluation was applied on nine agricultural and food industrial residues from five African countries.•Commercial systems are more efficient to exploit resources than traditional farming systems.•Cassava peels and cattle manure are the most efficient and renewable feedstocks from an emergy viewpoint among those studied.•New graphic representation of emergy results is provided by means of polar coordinates.
