•The management of wastes from steelmaking and galvanizing processes is reviewed.•Wastes included are slags, sludges, dusts, mill scales and precipitating sludges.•Current development of alternative management plans were examined.•Management routes may diminish the volume of waste sent to landfills.•Sustainability may contribute to make iron industry more profitable and competitive.
