•Results from the Global FRA are presented for the period 1990 and 2015.•Globally growing stock, annual wood removals, biomass and C-stocks increased.•The development shows distinct differences between regions.•Forest C-stocks and growing stock volume decreased in South America and Africa.•Globally one quarter of forest area is designated to multiple use forestry.
