•The behavior of fishermen in the Dominican Republic town of Buen Hombre is examined.•Variation in fish catch is explored through statistical and social network analysis.•Gear choice is found to be a determining factor of fishing behavior and structure.•New technology has helped some fishermen but has also created governance challenges.
