•A reduced model for unconfined groundwater flow is proposed using POD and DEIM.•The algorithm implements the model within the framework of MODFLOW.•Two to three orders of reduction are achieved with the test cases.•The POD-DEIM reduced model run faster than the full model and the POD model.
