Profit efficiency and habitat biodiversity: The case of upland livestock farmers in Ireland
详细信息
摘要
•The first paper to fully integrate farm survey data with a Shannon Weaver biodiversity index in a stochastic production frontier framework to evaluate the effects of habitat biodiversity on profit efficiency in livestock systems.•The study evaluates the private economic value of biodiversity. Study findings reveal that biodiversity plays a beneficial role in supporting private livestock farm profitability but the effect is non-linear.•Biodiversity efficiency is estimated using a stochastic translog production frontier model. Biodiversity efficiency is influenced by livestock numbers, habitat quality, spatial habitat patterns and arrangement, perimeter to area ratio, the number of plots, profit efficiency and farmer’s education and age.
