•Bio-productive land resources should be included in resource efficiency assessment.•Available thermodynamics-based resource accounting methods are critically analysed.•New framework for overall resource accounting is introduced for bio-based products.•Two bio-based products were compared with their fossil-derived counterparts.•Including ancient solar energy consumption of fossil resources improves comparison.
