•We examined habitat preferences of rodents in managed beech forest.•Our investigation was conducted after two mast and two non-mast years.•Masting caused pronounced fluctuations in rodent abundance.•High abundances were associated with weakened habitat preferences.•Capturing habitat selection dynamics requires controlling for population density.
