•Velocities arising from P1 Galerkin discretizations are not mass-conservative.•Conservative velocities are necessary to drive finite volume-based transport models.•Post-processing methods are attractive alternatives to locally conservative schemes.•The performance of the Larson-Niklasson (LN) post-processing strategy is investigated.•LN-based velocities are as accurate as mixed finite elements and much more efficient.
