•Model forests (MFs) are civil society organizations which are based on consensus.•MFs aim at the sustainable management of landscapes and natural resources.•MFs reconcile the needs of stakeholders with the long-term sustainability of resources.•MFs have four dimensions: these are civic engagement-organization-impact-values.•These four dimensions can be measured to determine the weaknesses.
