•Formalin ether for concentration of Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Toxoplasma in water samples.•Recovery percent were for Cryptosporidium 71.3 ± 12, for Giardia 63 ± 10 and for Toxoplasma 91.6 ± 9.•Intraclass observer variation was less for Giardia and greater for Toxoplasma.•Formalin ether method to concentrate protozoa in water is an alternative for low resources countries.
