•Pre-treatment efficiency in food waste AD systems was investigated.•To assess importance of efficiency change, LCA was utilized.•For GWP of the AD system, pre-treatment efficiency is in most cases not critical.•Results were sensitive to the methane potential of the digested slurry.•Frameworks conditions regarding energy system/biogas utilization were important.
