BACKGROUND: In vitro embryo culture is one of the key links to animal embryo engineering technology.OBJECTIVE: To review the recent progress in embryonic development and embryo culture in vitro.METHODS: PubMed database was searched for relevant articles published from January 1990 to October 2018. The keywords were "embryo engineering; pre-implantation embryo; in vitro embryo culture; assisted reproductive technology, ART" in English. Finally, 76 eligible articles were included in result analysis.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In vitro embryo culture system is a key technology of animal embryo engineering that is used in strict accordance with the medical ethical requirements. This culture system is essential for the smooth production of in vitro embryos using embryonic biotechnology. An improved in vitro embryo culture system is conductive to establishing an in vitro culture environment being closer to the internal environment, thereby enhancing the quality of embryos.
