By using beef extract as carbon source and inoculated with sludge, the influences on decomposing of sulfate minerals by sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) were studied with the methods of adding different iron oxides under anoxic condition. The decomposition process and mechanism were revealed by the analysis of SEM and EDS on the pH, iron ions, sulfate concentrations and solid productions. The results showed that iron oxide had obviously synergistic effect on dissolution of sulfate mineral. The mechanism is that: 1) the Fe2 + which was restored by iron-reducing bacteria could react with H2S to form iron sulfide,which could eliminate the restrain action of sulfate decomposion by SRB of H2S; and 2) the pH and alkalinity of the system were enhanced with the increasingly dissolving of the biochemical production CO2 due to the deoxidizing dissolution of iron oxide. Calcium ion which induced dissolution turned into calcite and settled as sediment, which also accelerated the decomposition process of sulfate minerals by SRB.
