The resources of coal mine is abundant in Jining area, Shandong Province, but there are serious surface subsidence caused by the development and utilization of coal mines. This paper aims to investigate the status of surface subsidence in coal mining concentration area of Jining. The latest high spatial resolution GeoEye-1 remote sensing image was mainly used during this investigation, and the hazards which had been caused by this surface subsidence in the study area were analyzed combined with historical data. 47 surface subsidence plashes were found through remote sensing investigation in the research area, and the area of plashes reaches 2 828 ha. 20 villages had been relocated, more than 2 667 ha farm land had been destroyed by the surface subsidence. This paper uses remote sensing to carry out surface subsidence investigation, and the survey results fully reflect the actual situation of surface subsidence hazards. Also, the rapid, macroscopic features of remote sensing technology were fully displayed in the paper.
