In this paper, the authors discussed the origin of such controversies, together with the compositions, sedimentary facies and distributions of this formation, via detailed researches on the selected stratotype and hypostratotype profiles. The sedimentary structures showed that the Yuhuatai Formation was characterized by braid river facies. The determinations of mammal and plant fossil groups in this formation, combined with the geochronological data of the above-covered Fangshan basalt, suggested that Yuhuatai formation was deposited during the late Early Miocene to early Middle Miocene. In addition, the sedimentary sequences and their spacial comparisons were also discussed in this paper.
