Advances in the technology of coal have been numerous since the first edition of this book appeared. Much progress has been made in the study of the petrology and chemistry of coal, new classifications have been developed, and there have been many improvements in the methods of extraction, preparation for market, and utilization of this fuel. Other features of this subject have, however, changed very little although our knowledge of the factors controlling the formation of the higher ranks of coal has advanced a few steps.
