Chemical alteration and mineral growth under high pCO2 conditions: Insights from the mineral chemistry of carbonate phases in the Caprese Reservoir (Northern Apennines, central Italy)

Drill-core samples from the deep CO2-rich Caprese Reservoir (central Italy, Northern Apennines) were studied. The former volcanic mineral assemblage was replaced by carbonates, illite and quartz. Interactions with H2O- and CO2-rich fluids were responsible of the new mineral assemblage. Regrowth of ankerites on calcites is related to the uptake of Fe and Mg in the crystal at the P-T conditions of formation. Carbonates zonation reflected the different Fe/Mg ratios controlled by kinetics and pCO2 oscillations.
