The net effects of the built environment on household vehicle emissions: A case study of Austin, TX

We investigated the relationship between land-use, vehicle travel, and associated emissions. We quantified the net effects of density, diversity, and design on vehicle emissions. We compared two development types: mixed-use development and non-mixed-use development. The secondary effect of reduced vehicle travel speed can diminish the effectiveness of land use strategies. Densification in developed areas may have some challenges for emissions reduction.
