Coal mine drainage (CMD) is enriched in rare earth elements and Y (REY) relative to pristine stream waters by 101–104 Total REY concentrations in CMD vary inversely with pH, and REE may precipitate out in the mine pool at pH > 6.6 REE patterns in CMD show an enrichment in the middle REE, which includes several elements considered critical resources Appalachian Basin CMD is estimated to generate ~ 538 t of REY per year in the dissolved form Low-pH, high-REY CMD may an attractive target for engineering REY extraction during treatment
