This paper aimed to give voice to small farmers whose opinions have been ignored. Sugarcane expansion leads to different perceptions among family farmers. The outlook for family farmers surrounded by sugarcane is not favorable, no matter whether they lease their land or not. The land lease contracts make it difficult for farmers to return to their former activities. Low revenue and deep transformation of the rural way of life explain why farmers resist leasing their land.
