Gold-coating improved wettability of polyethylene in comparison with plasma-treatment. Plasma-treatment increased the surface roughness while the subsequent gold-coating decreased the roughness. Adhesion and growth of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (L929) were studied in vitro. Low amounts of gold nanoparticles released in the medium promoted cell growth.
