A samarium-promoted cyclopropanation of unmasked ,-unsaturated acids is described. This reaction can be carried out on (E)- or (Z)-,-unsaturated carboxylic acids. In all cases the process is completely stereospecific and stereoselective. A mechanism has been proposedto explain the cyclopropanation reaction.
